What a great morning we had in Community Park on the 21st September, planting the Community Orchard! A massive Thank You to all the people who came down to help.
We currently have 14 trees planted including the ‘Golden Orchard’, awarded to the Community Group, where 5 people who were considered by the Community Group to have gone above and beyond in supporting the community, by fund raising or working for the community for 50 years or more.
The first of the Golden trees was planted by a resident who had worked in the NHS for over 50 years and continues to help the community in many ways, the second, was our local Councillor, who really does work hard for our Community, and actually always does what he says he will, the third, a local resident who quietly works away on Canada Woods, clearing the footpath and looking after the spring, the fourth, a young resident who is a real asset to the community, a credit to her parents, a member of the Youth Council and happy to help with anything with a smile, the final golden orchard tree was planted by our Parish Clerk, who really does work hard on behalf of the residents of Market Lavington and is rarely recognised for the amount of work she does.
Each local school also has its own tree.
The outgoing chair of the Parish Council kicked things off with planting the first tree and was thanked for his support for the Community Orchard and his 20 something tireless years working for the Community as a Councillor.
Thanks must also go to the Tree Council and their Branching Out Fund which paid for absolutely everything to enable Market Lavington to have a Community Orchard and for awarding the Golden Orchard to the Community Group.
We look forward to arranging ‘fruit based’ community events and a healthy and plentiful crop which the community can help themselves to. Any fruit not picked by the community will be distributed to people in need, such as food banks and homeless shelters.
