When/Why is a Felling Licence Required?
Under current Government regulations only 5 cubic metres of timber can be removed from a woodland in one quarter of a calendar year. This equates to one tree at 60 cm mid diameter with a height of 15 metres.
If the timber is to be sold then only 2 cubic metres can be removed.
In order to thin and regenerate Canada Woods within a short timescale, to coincide with species and habitat lifecycles and to enable user groups to access the space, then the felling must be completed within a short window – September to March.
The Parish Council has applied for a felling licence for this purpose from The Forestry Commission, and have a 10 Year Woodland Management Plan in place to continue to monitor the woodland.
All trees to be felled will be marked by a highly qualified Woodland Management Consultant with whom we have been working since December 2021.
